Turn Your Processes into Intellectual Properties
There is brilliant entrepreneurial maxim from The E-Myth that states that “You must work on your business, not just in your business.” This means you must document your processes in order to refine and standardize them. This ensures that you create consistency in terms of how they are delivered to your clients and that nothing slips through the cracks. It also ensures that you are never at the mercy of maverick talent. In other words, if a staff member leaves you, your ability to train someone new and not miss a beat is predictable.
You and your team are probably all very competent, but you can always raise the bar. As I covered in the Rule of Three, any process that you execute more than three times and has more than three steps must be documented in order to find areas for improvement for consistent deployment. As an example, take your Client Onboarding Process. How many steps are there in your current process? Let’s briefly revisit the five I talked about:
